Sydney

Sydney.

So much love for this city, this urban metropolis.

It's an overcast day. Driving through the CBD. Observing the foggy mist obscure Centrepoint tower and then rearrange itself to reveal her again.

The street in front of me has little traffic on this Sunday afternoon. Cars clearing the way for pedestrians who are picking their way along the footpath, mostly overshadowed by umbrellas to shield them form the occasional wet onslaught.

The streets are primarily quiet though. Sydneysiders don't seem to handle rain well, treating it as West Canadian's would an unlikely blizzard in Vancouver itself. Drivers appear to lose their ability to drive. I try to lay off on the horn and remind myself to be gracious - maybe those drivers forever hesitating in front are lost tourists or locals who don't drive in the city regularly...

I look down Elizabeth street at the buildings up ahead on the bend. Some cream, some sandstone, green trim, windows, a curved facade. I like these buildings. They represent Sydney to me. Her with her cluster of buildings assembled around the harbour.

I don't know if its the weather, the gloomy grey and the lack of light but I seem to notice buildings I've never seen, details I have evidently passed over. It's as if I'm seeing the city in a different light, approaching from another angle. The streets appear familiar yet undiscovered. I appreciate anew the brief traverse from city to home and once again reflect on how much I appreciate living in this beautiful city. Even on a rainy, winters day...
