Ocean life & Home redefined
//Days later. I'm sitting at my dining table. In my dream apartment. All white & scando, clean & contemporary. Raindrops beading on the windows. Blurring the view of orange terracotta rooftops, the grey ocean & sky blending into one behind. Why leave somewhere you love. That's home. That's a dream realised in itself. A prayer answered. You here the soft accent behind you of your housemates preparing breakfast. It's idyllic & it's my life. But yet you feel you're being directed elsewhere. That the thoughts of living beyond that grey ocean you've held for years are soon to be realised.
I take a bite of my berry yoghurt & muesli & open a Kinfolk magazine that had been sitting on my piano. It opens to an article, on continental drift. Creatives reflecting on their adventures of moving across the world. Figures. All these road signs. I'm getting the message.
Josue Martinez on moving to New Orleans from Guatemala. "...Going back to my native side of the world would take at least 15 hours and no less than a thousand dollars, but I don't have to worry about being far away from home. In only a six months, I've found it again here (in Bali). New Orleans and Guatemala City are part of my past, but I still consider them home. ...Once a place gains the title of home, such a privilege is never taken away..."
Carly Díaz: "Amsterdam became my home in the truest sense of the word. The moment we began to contemplate leaving, I began to see everything I would miss, from the easy way I could navigate the city on two wheels, the perfect size latte, my friends and all of the faces that became a regular part of my daily life... Why leave a home we loved so much? ...I've complicated the ideal concept of home by living in (multiple) countries over the past ten years, by marrying someone born on another continent and by wondering where the next move will take us. Once the whole world becomes a possible place to reside, the sense of home undergoes a profound shift."
Home is in the process of being redefined & re-envisaged for myself personally. It goes beyond a location. It doesn't have to be static. And it doesn't have to stay the same. It's carried in your heart.
